These data sources are often
application data stores such as customer relationship management (CRM), legacy, or an
online transaction processing (OLTP) system. Usually, data marts are fed from the data
warehouse with ETL tools where analytical functions can be performed on specific subsets
of the data.
From the very start metadata has played an integral role in the development of the data
warehouse. Business metadata helps the user to understand the meaning of the data and how
the data is being used within the corporation in relation to the business processes. Business
metadata can be generated at the time of design, architecture, data population, and process
analysis. Examples of business metadata include information models, logical models, quality
metrics, report definitions, terms, rules, and many other elements that help the business
user understand what the data is and how it is being used (Do & Rahm, 2000). Technical
metadata describes the physical data components, which include tables, fields, structures,
relationships, and transformation rules. While not a perfect classification, technical metadata
is used by the information technology staff, and the business metadata is used by the
business and analyst community.
