The usual comment from metadata experts is that true metadata expands far beyond simply
cataloging data or other assets. True, but on the other hand, library science goes far beyond
simply sticking a number on the cover of a book and ensuring it is placed in the correct
location. A card catalog not only indexes books but also journals, microfiche, magazines,
newspapers, government documents, and annual reports. The vast majority of the information
is based on a simple ontology of information architecture called the Dewey Decimal System.
Classification provides a system for organizing knowledge and may be used to organize
knowledge represented in any form, for example, books, documents, and electronic resources.
The Dewey Decimal System provides a means to classify the resources by utilizing a tiered
classification where the first tier defined the main classes spanning a range from 000 to 999:
generalities, philosophy and psychology, religion, social science, language, natural science
and mathematics, technology (applied sciences), arts, literature, and geography and history.
The second tier continues to break down the topic into further defined sub-categories which
are referred to as divisions.
