Each major category is divided into nine sub-categories spanning
a range of 10 to 90. Each sub-category is further divided into nine specialized topics
ranging from 1 to 9. This produces a three character code of classification which can then
be organized into further details by adding decimals to the code. For example:
00 Natural sc ences & math (T er )
0 Astronomy & all ed sc ences (T er )
523 Specific celestial bodies (Tier 3)

The Dewey Decimal System is a hierarchical system, in which the arrangement of books
on the shelves moves from the general to the specific. The system works wonderfully and
has been in use for over 100 years. Invented by Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey, the Dewey
Decimal System created a revolution in library science and set in motion a new era of
librarianship.
