engines like Yahoo. Implicit assemblies could include inference engines that traverse the
corporation looking for relevant assets. Keyword-based search engines provide a basic
example of how this process might work in the future. Currently, a user types in a few
keywords, and the search engine returns a set of documents that contain some or all of the
keywords. This functionality should be expanded to include any asset within the corporation,
and not just the ones documented in a Web page or document. In the future, agents will be
able to traverse operating systems, XML constructs, interfaces, and other assets that can be
viewed by the computer system. Assets will then be able to be grouped by context, usage,
time, and various other constructs. Semantics takes data and information and applies the
behavior of the user in order to define meaning (McComb, 2004). Semantics take metadata
above and beyond the simple descriptive definition to providing the basis for understanding
the business model itself. In order to achieve this level, applications must move beyond the
simple catalog to an integrated semantic architecture.
