Metadata.Maturity.Model
As described in the opening paragraph, the CMM is a model for judging the maturity of the
software processes of an organization and for identifying the key practices that are required
to increase the maturity of these processes. The CMM is organized into five maturity levels:
initial, repeatable, defined, managed, and optimizing. Predictability, effectiveness, and
control of an organization??™s software processes are believed to improve as the organization
moves up these five levels. While not rigorous, the empirical evidence to date supports this
belief. Figure 8 presents the metadata maturity model.
The Metadata Maturity Model is broken into three vertical sections: metadata maturity
level, program basics, and program development. The maturity definition describes the
level obtained by an organization as they mature along the natural progression of metadata
management. Program basics will describe the support structures required in order to reach
the higher levels of maturity. Program development will describe the levels of integration.
Horizontally, the rows depict the natural progression from one level to the next with the
indication that an organization has achieved one or more of the six vertical classifications.
