"Architecture of Reliable Web Applications Software"

Active usage of metadata is taking
metadata to the next level of value, beyond reference and context building that is used in
the prior section. Active usage does not control the metadata, but uses that metadata to drive
change within the organization. At the lowest end of active utility is using database metadata
systems to control the structure of the physical database, or using ETL metadata to control
the transformation between two systems. Advanced active utility will utilize the metadata
portfolio or ecosystem to control, manage, and govern the entire technology environment.
Maturity.Levels
Six maturity levels have been identified within the metadata maturity model shown in Figure
8. Each of these levels is a natural progression of growth and expansion of the products
and services described in the previous sections. Since the model has two distinct vertical
sections, the progression from one level to the next will not be as simple as moving across
the horizontal cross-sections. In addition, the levels of the six functional elements are not
as simple as ???yes, the organization has the capability??? or ???no, they do not.??? In the following
paragraphs, the author will describe in general terms the organizational attributes that
define the classification.
