Implications for the Architecture Community
The results of this research suggest that architecture-based organizations need to move beyond
simply defining standards and ignoring the success or failure of the implementations.
Architects must understand the implications of their decisions and the standards they set.
By implementing enterprise metadata, the architecture can play an integral part of governing
the Web-enabled environment. Governance ensures that the information technology
environment is supervised, controlled, monitored, and guided toward the strategic direction
of the organization. In doing this, Information Technology enables the business and can
create that elusive competitive advantage.
Recommendations
Clearly, the enterprise metadata environment has evolved over the past few years. Although
sporadic, the environment has progressed since the beginnings of EAI or SOA. The
technology, standards, and design frameworks evolution will continue as more and more
organizations embrace XML, taxonomies, ontologies, and many of the Semantic Web
standards. Integration continues to be the basis of most technology investments within the
organization. There is a convergence of technology, implementations, and standards which
will speed the acceptance of this technology in the coming years.
